MAMO
Mamo is a term used by the Arhuacos and other indigenous groups in the Sierra Nevada de
Santa Marta to refer to their spiritual leaders. The Mamos are revered figures who hold profound wisdom and knowledge, playing a crucial role in the cultural and spiritual life of
their communities. They are the highest authorities of each village and act as the guiding compass for the collective. Mamos are considered the guardians of the traditions, laws, and spiritual teachings of the Universe. The practice of these teachings is housed under the term, Universal Law.Mamos are responsible for maintaining harmony and balance between the natural world
and human activities. They conduct spiritual ceremonies, offer guidance, and make important decisions that affect the community. Their work often involves mediating
between the spiritual and physical realms, ensuring that the laws of nature and the cosmos are respected and followed. The position of a Mamo is not inherited but earned through years of rigorous spiritual
training and learning. They are chosen at a very young age as a special pupil and train their
entire life to attune to the subtleties of Natural and Universal Law. Mamos are seen as
intermediaries who communicate with ancestral spirits and the divine to protect and
nurture the vital energy of the world.
Nabusimake
Nabusimake, often regarded as a spiritual capital and the Capital of Peace, is the stronghold of the Alliance of the Four Original Peoples.Located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, within Nabusimake, a temple
exists which safeguards “The Heart” of The Heart of The World. This sacred temple serves
as a binding bridge between the immaterial and material realms, anchoring spiritual blueprints into our physical world, representing the core essence of existence. The highest
spiritual authorities, the Supreme Mamos, dedicate their lives to embodying and protecting the sacredness of this temple. However, the sanctity of this sacred site was nearly obliterated when Catholic monks invaded in 1916; driving the Arhuaco elders to the brink of extinction. These intruders established orphanages and schools, dismantled traditional food systems, and forced the Mamos into hiding. They retreated to distant caves, with Arhuaco women, in an effort to
preserve the tribe’s wisdom and continuity.Through resilience and with aid from Colombian media outlets, the Arhuacos eventually reclaimed Nabusimake in 1982, evicting the church, and from there began a recovery process that has spanned across the last fifty years.Despite their perseverance, the Arhuacos are currently contending with persistent threats
from mining corporations, corrupt government actions, rampant deforestation, polluting
industries, and illegal incursions onto their reservation.Guarding Nabusimake, an epitome of spiritual and cultural heritage, is of paramount
importance—it stands as one of the most vital sites on Earth, demanding our utmost
dedication to its protection.
